  • Animal Bite Prevention Program

    0

Information came from the fliers of PAWS working hand in hand with Master Foods Phils., Inc, the makers of Pedigree & Whiskas.

Dogs Can Be Friendly, and Dogs Can Bite!

The friendship of a dog can be wonderful for children’s emotional and physical health. But children are most at risk for dog bite injury.

According to the Public Health office of the San Lazaro Hospital, a total of 6815 cases of dog bite were reported to their office, in the last quarter of 2001. That’s 75 dog-biting incidents a day – and covers only parts of Metro Manila.

The Bite Free (Iwas Kagat) Program aims to reduce the incidence of dog bite injury – by encouraging responsible dog guardianship and by teaching children safe behaviour around dogs.

While no prevention program is 100% successful, teaching children how to approach or retreat safely from a dog, and which situation to avoid, will give them greater confidence and safety in handling encounters with dogs. It can make life more enjoyable for dogs too!

How to Meet a Dog Safely

    1. Never run up to any dog, you might frighten them.
    2. Ask your parent or adult with you, if you can pet the dog.
    3. Ask the person holding the dog if you can pet the dog.
    4. Ask the dog if you can pet him. Stand beside the dog, extend a fist and allow him to sniff your closed hand. Move slowly and speak softly. Quick movements and loud noises can scare a dog.
    5. Pet the dog, starting under his chin and then you can move your hand up on top of his head.
    6. Always remember, NEVER RUN AWAY FROM A DOG. No matter how gentle they are, they will want to chase you.

How to Act Around A Stray Dog

Things to Remember with Dogs (and all Animals)

    • Ask Permission before petting someone else’s dog
    • Leave mother animals and their young alone.
    • Do not try to pet dogs that are tied up, sleeping, eating, behind fences, or in vehicles.
    • Do not pull their ears or tails.
    • Do not grab their food, bones, or toys.
    • Do not try to stop fights. Call an adult for help.
    • Always act kindly and gently. Animals have feelings too.
    • Leave wild animals alone.
    • Report the details of injured, stray and threatening animals to adults who will call the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) or animal control authorities.

    Why do Dogs Bite?

The vast majority of dogs are safe, reliable companions but even a friendly dog may bite if threatened, angry, afraid, or hurt. Some dogs can be described as dangerous-bred, or trained to be aggressive, with predatory instincts that may case them to chase and attack a fleeing child.

Dogs Protect Things, Places and PEOPLE

Just as humans do, dogs protect things they care about, whether it be food, their puppies or their favorite toys. They are also protective of spaces – their own and their guardians’. Eating and sleeping areas, yards, porches, and parked cards are all commonly defended by dogs. A child reaching through a fence or arriving unannounced at the door can turn a neighbor’s warm loyal pet in to a growling, aggressive protector.

    Other reasons dogs may bite

    • Cornering, crowding, or standing over a dog, particularly a small one, may make it feel defensive. Children should stand back and never put their faces close to a dog’s mouth. The face is the most common site of serious dog bite injuries.
    • Stray dogs are in danger and maybe dangerous. Any dog that is loose may be lost, frightened or injured – and more likely to bite.
    • Sick or injured dogs may be afraid or irritable and should be avoided by children.
    • Elderly dogs may have impaired vision or hearing which can cause them to be more easily startled.
    • Some dogs are inadequately socialized. Dogs living with and around children need to be able to tolerate degree of rough treatment without resorting to biting. Choose your dog carefully and discourage even play biting by puppies, to avoid problems later.
    • Most dog bites injuries occur during play. A dog that is excited or nervous can bite by mistake. Children should be taught not to play fight, tease, yell, or chase dogs or other animals.
    • Dogs can feel left out, especially when a new baby or pet joins the household. Give a dog extra love and attention at these times.

Guardian’s Responsibilities: Selection, Socialization, Spay/Neuter, Care & Control

    1. Under the law, owners can be held liable for their dog’s action – including dog bites. You can reduce the likelihood of your dog biting someone by observing these points:
    2. Do not let your dog run loose. Provide a fenced run and leash your dog when you go for a walk. Avoid having young children walk dogs they cannot control.
    3. When you meet children while out for a walk, be sure they approach your dog properly. This ensures their safety as well as protecting your dogs.
    4. Socialize and train your dog. Puppies from pet shops may not have received the socialization they need to be well adjusted, particularly if they are from puppy mills.
    5. Choose your dog carefully. Pups should be evaluated in light of the parent dog’s behavior.
    6. Ensure that your dog is vaccinated annually for rabies and other communicable diseases. If your barangay has an existing regulation for dog registration, have your dog registered. This will help in identification, should your dog get lost or is impounded.
    7. Do not leave babies or very young children alone with a dog.

Feel free to share this with your friends who are planning to adopt a dog, or already have dogs :) The more people know about their responsibility – not just to dogs but to animals in general, the better for everyone in this planet.

  • My First PAWS Visit

    0

More often than not, my love for my dogs  is met with a few laughs and more ridicule than appreciation. While I don’t want to admit it doesn’t affect me, it does, and sometimes I wish I had more friends, or people around me who feel the same way I do about dogs.

I’m not one to say I’ve loved dogs as a child – I’ve had several bad experiences with dogs (dog chasing me, dog chasing me while I biked, dog barking at me till I nearly curled into a ball on the ground… and the list goes on) and one of them involved needles =( boo.

Last May 20, our dog Pam gave birth to 5 beautiful puppies and in the process of selling them, I couldn’t help but think what the future holds for my puppies. Would their new owners love them as much as we did? Would they still love them after losing their puppy cuteness? Would they ever experience living on the streets as many of their unfortunate comrades have been doing? It breaks my heart to imagine one day, they might be shown the cruelty man is famous for :( or worse, be the “lucky” pulutan of the night :(

Which brings me to my first visit to Paws, the animal rehabilitation center in Quezon City.

    Parc map

I’ve been wanting to visit the place for years now, and only had the time to do so a few weeks ago. As you know, I only venture out of the house every so often, so since we would be in the QC area that day, I asked my dad to bring me to PAWS.

    paws1

Tip: visit the place during the dead hours of the day, or week, unless gusto nyo ma-trap sa traffic ng ateneo, C5, at Marikina.

    paws2

Of course, I didn’t come to PAWS empty handed. I brought 2 bags of  dry cat food, and 2 bottles of zonrox (the biggest ones).

Tip: PAWS needs your help – in money or in kind. In-kind donations for animal rehabilitation include: Medicines – cat & dog food – food bowls – old towels – collars & leashes – detergent.

    paws

Not to sound melodramatic, but I could feel the tears coming when I visited the dog pens. There were 2 – and it was feeding time so you could imagine the dogs jumping, running up and down, waiting for their food. I had 2 major feelings at that moment – happy because they were in a good place, well taken care of, and they were eating dog food!  I felt sad too – everyday these dogs are hoping the next visitor who comes to PAWS would be their brand new parents, so they can start living & loving again.

    paws

Don’t forget the cats! There were cats everywhere! On the steps, in the office, and in a separate space of their own. There were 4 kittens up for adoption in the office.

    paws

Somehow, knowing PAWS exists gives me comfort there’s a group of good good goooood people rescuing and rehabilitating stray dogs/cats. I know in the event my pets not in my care anymore find themselves abused or left alone to fend for themselves, there’s a group who just might be able to help them(although I told the buyers of the puppies if they can’t take care of the puppies anymore, to just bring them back to us).

“Animal lovers are a special breed of humans, generous of spirit, full of empathy, perhaps a little prone to sentimentality, and with hearts as big as a cloudless sky” – Marley and Me.

I  pray Pinoys would be more responsible with their pets. I’m guilty of that – we didn’t intend to have puppies but we now have 5 adorable puppies chewing my jeans away. I know selling them is against the principles of PAWS(as they espouse adoption), and because of that, we’ve had an agreement here in the house not to have any more puppies. The 2nd step is to get more information on neutering/spaying  our dogs. To be honest, selling my puppies is a very painful, heartbreaking process for me and my family, and we don’t sell for profit.

“Someday, I’ll be able to put up an animal shelter in Las Piñas… “

I’m still hoping I’ll be able to do more for PAWS; whether it’s adopting or making a donation, I’m still not sure. I just know that by writing about PAWS, I’m already showing my support.

PAWS is open from Mondays – Saturdays, 10 am – 5 pm.  Quick, schedule your visit today! You may also visit their website at http://www.paws.org.ph/.

  • Mga Trapo Sa Gobyerno at Work: Mayor Nasser Pangandaman, Jr., & Company

    3
Gawd, this is just horrible. Heard about this story from friends @ plurk, and reposted the whole thing from the victim’sblog. Obviously, I am siding with the De La Paz Family because whatever altercations encountered, whether in the golf course, the grocery, or your neighborhood beauty parlor, does not merit beating up people.
I am sooo ashamed to call them our Government Officials. TRAPO. TRAPO. TRAPO.
Other news articles about the story:
    —-

    The world has gone crazy.

So, I just had the worst day of my life.

At around 1:30 PM today, at Valley Golf and Country Club, Antipolo City, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman, Jr., Mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur, his father, Secretary Nasser Pangandaman of the Department of Agrarian Reform, and company, beat my defenseless 56-year-old dad and my 14-year-old brother to a pulp because of some stupid misunderstanding on the golf course.

This is a golf course. I have been a golfer all my life, and I have never seen anything like this. NOTHING. This is hard to comprehend. And it happened to my own father and my own brother too. Right in front of my eyes.

My brother and I were playing golf at the South Course of Valley. We were on the 3rd hole, and we see two golf carts going past us, overtaking our flight, and setting up to tee off on the next hole. My dad goes up to them and asks them why they would do that, why they would overtake us without even asking for our permission. Golf etiquette 101. One of the guys says that they’re with the flight in front of us. (So what? That doesn’t give them the right to just pass us WITHOUT asking.) So, we go to the 5th hole. The flight behind us catches up with us, and asks us what caused the hold up. We said that this flight just slipped in front of our flight. So we complained to the marshall. We play the 5th hole and walk towards the next hole, where there is a teehouse, and both the flights in front of us were there, talking with the marshall. The mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur talks with my dad. Things get heated up. Voices were raised. But never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine that someone would pull out a punch. Apparently not. He attacks my father. His flightmates, maybe 2 or 3 of them, rush to his aid and beat up my father. My 56-year-old father. My younger brother and I could not just watch. We rushed to break the fight. My younger brother pleads to the mayor to please stop it. To not hurt my dad. To just stop. His words still ring through my head…“Sorry na po, sorry na po…tama na…tama na po…” With his hands in front of his chest in a praying position. PLEADING. The mayor socks him in the face. My brother defended himself. My dad is still on the ground getting clobbered. My brother is the same way. I try to stop the fight, but all I can do is stop one person. There were 4 or 5 of them attacking now.

Someone breaks up the fight. I thought it was all over. The mayor shouts to his caddy: “Hindi nila kami kilala! Sabihin mo nga sa kanila kung sino ako!” And believe me, I had no idea who this person was. But now I know. He’s the person who, with 4 other men, beat up my 56-year-old father and my 14-year-old brother. He’s the person who sacks a pleading 14-year-old kid in the face. He’s a person who, I am sure, is gonna rot in hell.

I lash out, but my dad held me back. I was screaming my lungs out, shouting to this mayor, telling him about what he had done. I said: “Nakakahiya kayo. Singkwenta’y sais anyos ang tatay ko. And kapatid ko kakatorse anyos. Anong ilalaban nila sayo?”

The mayor looks at my brother, point to his face, and says,“Tatandaan kita!” And he tells me that my brother has a bad attitude and that I need to watch him. WHAT THE HELL?! So, my brother’s bad for defending his father?!

We leave. We walk to the clubhouse to file a complaint. My brother asks for a doctor. My dad could barely walk. Their group comes to the clubhouse, sees my brother. Once again my brother pleads, says sorry, and is crying. He was CRYING, for crissakes. But no. The relentless mayor still punches him in the face, and then sees my dad and goes after my dad again. Him and his friend pull my dad to the ground, pulls at his feet, and steps on him like he’s dirt. I run to him and try to hold him back, holding him back by his shirt, while this other guy and this girl tries to stop me. She tells me to just stop it. I scream in her face “they’re beating my father up and you want me to stop?!” I pull at his shirt–I don’t let go. All I can see was my dad being trampled on. I didn’t even see my brother getting beat up.

People pull them away. I get my dad, and I saw my brother. His right ear was bleeding. I freaked out. I told the receptionists to bring my brother to the clinic. I pull my dad away. People were separating us.

My mom and my older brother come. I tell her Bino’s right ear is bleeding. They both look like they could kill. My dad holds my brother off, I hold off my mom. When I finally got my mom under control, my older brother gets away and I hold him off. Two of the mayor’s bodyguards pull out guns. I embraced my brother from the back, just holding him back, crying. The receptionists came to us, crying, hugging me, my dad, and my mom, whispering to us to just leave. “Maam, umalis na po kayo, may mga baril sila…Maam…umalis na po kayo please…”

I am pretty sure the Secretary of DAR did not take part in the fight, but he just watched all this happen. He watched two of his sons, as we figured out, the other guy was his son, too, beat up my father and my 14-year-old brother. He didn’t do anything to stop it. And this person is what now? A cabinet member. A politician.

Sounds like something out of a movie, doesn’t it? But this is what happened. TODAY. The day after Christmas. To my family. And all I ask for is JUSTICE. The people at Valley Golf did not seem to want to help us. None of the security guards even tried to stop the fight. Right in the clubhouse. I came back after the fight was over and talked to the receptionists. They say they did not see anything. The general manager of Valley Golf would not give us the names of the men who made my brother’s ear bleed. It took him an hour. Maybe even more than that. He seemed to not want to help us. Because, we were against the SECRETARY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRARIAN REFORM and the MAYOR OF MASIU CITY, LANAO DEL SUR. They were all scared.

The world has gone crazy. Two politicians beat up a defenseless 56-year-old father and his 14-year-old son. At a golf course. I swear to God, I thought golfers were decent people. You would think politicians were decent people. I guess not. I guess they gang up on 56-year-old men and beat up pleading 14-year-old kids.

Please pray for my dad, my brother and for my whole family. Please pray that we get JUSTICE. Oh God, please, give these people what they deserve.

  • 5 Benefits of Having A Dog

    3

I’ve never been the kind to hide my affection for dogs. People look at me, puzzled, when I tell them about Wendy my dearly departed dog and I still get all choked up. Sometimes I think I love dogs more than I love babies or kids. Although I still get terrified of stray dogs (I had a traumatic experience as a kid), I nonetheless love these creatures – even more so now while browsing the net looking for stuff to kill boredom.

Turns out, dogs have more benefits than we actually realize. I’m sure all dog lovers can relate, and if you’re not one, perhaps now’s the time to be a dog fan :)

    Dogs as Doctors!

This is nothing to quack about. A study has shown that dogs have a 1 percent error rate when diagnosing life threatening diseases as compared to the 34 percent of doctors. It was reported that a woman’s life was saved when her dog kept sniffing a mole at her thigh but ignored other moles – the dog even tried to bite off the mole when she was wearing shorts. After consulting with a doctor, the mole was removed and was confirmed to be a malignant melanoma.

Dogs Can Help You Lose Weight!
A bit common sense, don’t you think? If you have a dog, you’d know it’s prerogative for dogs to have their daily walks – if not they’d get obese like their human counterparts (overweight people tend to have overweight pets). In addition, I find myself sweating gallons just convincing my dog to take a bath! South Beach Diet? Meh.

    Dogs Help You Socialize!
Let’s not be coy and admit to ourselves that sometimes we don’t walk the dog for its physical benefits but for the good it does to our social life. Having a dog tag along in one of your walks makes you seem as more open and approachable to other people. In fact, I’ve seen a lot of girls walking their dogs for show. I don’t endorse having a dog for shallow reasons but if it helps you expand your network, and your dog is well taken care of – then please, by all means, adopt a dog today.

Dogs Will Listen to You Whine and Won’t Complain
One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you’re feeling blue is that he doesn’t try to find out why. ~Author Unknown.

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face – Ben Williams.

I remember getting all depressed over a boy and Wendy would just be there to listen – as if she had any choice, haha! A study has shown more people experience less stress when talking to dogs instead of friends or family – the fact that they don’t judge and only love us makes them even better than friends in the listening department (and they can’t exactly talk back now can they?)

    Dogs will love you unconditionally.

No matter how strange or weird looking you are, or whatever flaw people can see you in – they are oblivious to it. With just a wag of a tail and those puppy dog eyes, you know you are being received warmly – no words necessary.

These are just some of the reasons I can give you for loving your dog or adopting one – remember that having a dog entails additional responsibilities and it can be difficult at times – but when you think of the benefits and how all they’ve ever wanted is to serve and love us, who could resist? Give your dog a hug today!
